The Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay is 14 metres tall and draws on Maori folklore and legend. The Maori Rock Carvings were designed an carved by Matahi Brightwell. The dominant carvings represents the face of Matahi’s ancestor Ngatoroirangi the legendary navigator and tohunga (high priest) and embrace spiritual associations with ancestors and guardians of the local Maori tribe (iwi).
