The track involves a steep boulder staircase and climbing, steady walking over a flat plateau where the scenery is stark and uncompromising combined with scree slopes to ‘slip’ down. Its a mountainous adventure and tourists need to be reminded that they are in the midst of our giant volcanoes Tongariro, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu.
In the middle of summer and peak tourist season the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can be busy with up to 3,000 tourists a day ( as some of the photos indicate) but during the shoulder season, when the temperatures are slightly cooler the essentially volcanic wilderness provides you with the desolate majesty. The unforgettable steam vents, scrambling scree slopes, hot springs and the crisp colours of the emerald lakes contrasting with the sheer vertical height of the volcanoes will inspire you.
The distance is 19.4 km. Typically it takes between 5 and 8 hors to complete depending on your level of fitness.
Its a great day on the basis that you are well prepared and want for nothing.
